Raising Kind Kids For All MomKind

For the past several years, I couldn’t help but notice a mass movement around people wanting to raise kind kids. Who knows, maybe it was something that was always there, and I only noticed it because we’re in the thick of raising young children ourselves. But for what it’s worth – it’s given me new hope in humanity and what fellow mom and friend of mine, Stephanie Mooring, has dubbed as MomKind. In fact, she’s built an entire organization around the mission to “spread kindness in our community, one idea at a time.” 

I first became involved with her mission in the early days after Hurricane Harvey devastated my home town of Houston. What started out as a humble effort to feed, rebuild, and ultimately bring hope to so many who had lost everything – has evolved into more than even Stephanie, the founder of MomKind (formerly Harvey Moms), could have ever imagined. But that’s just the thing – she did imagine it. It’s like the saying that hangs on the wall in Cha Cha’s room “She believed she could. So she did.” 

But even she will tell you – it’s not about her individual goals, it’s about the amazing families that show up over and over again to volunteer their time and resources to help others in need in their community. I personally love being a part of MomKind because, like many moms who choose to stay home with their kids, you yearn for a way to connect with “the outside world” (as I like to call it ?). This organization has given me that outlet and so much more. A true connection with others in a way that makes you realize even the smallest act of kindness can make a difference in someone’s life. 

Not only that, they’ve also created KidKind – a subset of MomKind that allows our kids to be involved in monthly service projects. Garrett gets so excited whenever I tell him we have a new project that week, and I’ve even started bringing Cha Cha along. Their latest one was for Grammy’s Cookie Convoy where they were able to meet a local Air Force Captain, and then decorate cards that will be mailed along with boxes of cookies to troops overseas.

I was recently asked by Stephanie, what raising kind kids means to me and here’s what I shared –

“My MomKind is…knowing that, at the end of the day, no matter how crazy life gets – that I did everything I could to teach our kids about what it truly means to be kind. To show them how loving one another like a true friend means sometimes putting others needs before your own. And that more often than not, when you pay it forward in life – good things will come your way. I hope to see them grow up knowing how it feels to have your heart filled with joy just by helping a friend or even a stranger in need. My son Garrett’s only 5 but I feel it in his heart already what being kind means to him, and there’s truly no better feeling as a mom. Now my 18 mo old, Cha Cha, she’s a work in progress.” – Cammeo
