Mom Jean Confessions: Home is Where the Gingerbread is

I don’t know about you, but nobody did holidays like my mom growing up. She lived for them. From the decor, to the food – she made every holiday worth celebrating. On Easter, my friends would come from near and far, just to color Easter eggs at my house. Even to this day, she still makes us sit around the table – as we all try to pretend like we’re too cool for school, but secretly we love it. She’s living proof that you are never too old for holiday traditions. It’s something that truly has stuck with me all these years, and something I was so excited to do with my own kids.

With Christmas just around the corner (ok, but seriously, how did that happen??), I’m reminded of one of my favorite traditions – building a gingerbread house with my mom. Ever since Garrett was born, I’ve wanted to do this with him but didn’t feel like he would really enjoy it until now (he’s four). Back in the day (and I won’t say what day, but let’s just say there was crimped hair involved…), my mom would have to scour the grocery store for all the fixings to make our gingerbread house come to life. Nowadays, we have companies like Create a Treat who make a Gingerbread  House Kit that comes with literally everything you need – gingerbread, icing, candy, and even a handy E-Z Build® tray that helps keep the house from falling to pieces (if you’ve ever tried to build one without it, you know what I mean!).

Garrett seriously ate it up – no pun intended ;).  He was so adamant about building it exactly like the picture on the box showed – down to the color candy, etc. The hub’s said it’s all those hours of following Lego instructions, haha. I’m glad I captured it in photos, because my dreams of having it in our front window for all to see was rather short-lived, since it took all of t-minus 1 minute for Captain Destructor to demolish our creation. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted 🙂

My husband and I build gongerbread houses every year. As much as I always look forward to it once the time comes I hate it. Only because I am so competitive but yet so awful at decorating the houses but my husband is so good. Although, I can’t wait jil our little girl is the age that she can enjoy building them as well! And I can’t imagine building them without the little kits we have.

Haha that’s sounds like my mom – she’s so ridiculously competitive 😂 Prob why my dad never partook growing up haha. It is fun doing it when they’re little though!

So fun! We did gingerbread houses this week, too, and the kits are totally a game changer!

We’re big on traditions with our kids because they were such a big part of my childhood. I find that I still get homesick yearning to go back to those times I remember and cherish them for all they’re worth now that I truly recognize the impact they have.

Awesome! I will never make one without this kit! Oh and I totally hear you – funny how getting older and having your own family gives you perspective 😊

I haven’t made a gingerbread in house in so long, this kit would be perfect – one stop shop! I can’t wait until my little one is old enough to enjoy this too!

Would love to hear from you!
